Primo N. Lara

Primo “Lucky” Lara, Jr., MD, is Professor of Medicine at the University of California (UC) Davis School of Medicine and Acting Director of the NCI-designated UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. His principal research and clinical interests revolve around developmental therapeutics in solid tumor oncology, particularly genitourinary (GU) malignancies. He has been on the faculty of UC Davis since 1999. He is chair of the Southwest Oncology Group’s (SWOG) Advanced Renal Cell Cancer Organ Site since 2002. He is currently receiving research funding as Principal Investigator (PI) of several programs, including a NCI P30 Cancer Center Support Grant, NCI K12 Paul Calabresi Clinical Oncology Training Grant, and a UM1 Early Therapeutics Award (Phase II: California Cancer Consortium), among others. He has also been PI on prior NCI-funded R21 and R01 grants. He serves as an active co-investigator on U10 LAPS and DOD grants at UC Davis. He has successfully led numerous clinical trials, ranging from phase I to III, and has authored or co-authored nearly 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts. Dr. Lara currently serves as a Chair and Charter Member of NCI’s Subcommittee F (Institutional Training and Education Study Section), Co-Chair of the NCI’s Investigational Drug Steering Committee, Chair of SWOG’s Professional Review Committee, Chair of SWOG’s Advanced Renal Cell Cancer Organ Site (GU Committee), among other commitments. He has contributed to the scientific program committees of the SUO and co-chaired the Kidney Cancer Committee (II) of the 2014 EAU-ICUD. Dr. Lara has also been an active volunteer for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), serving as an elected member of its Nominating Committee (2014-2017), member of the Education Committee, including as Chair of the CME Subcommittee (2012-2013) and as Genitourinary Cancer Track Leader (2010-2011). He has also served as faculty in previous AUA annual meetings.
