The reduction of nutrient discharged from California treatment plants takes on many different forms. Current strategies include standard treatment practices, reuse, potable reuse, resource recovery technologies, etc. This curated track will bring in a group of luminaries in the field to discuss the current and future nutrient management in California.

Biography:

Michael Falk is a wastewater process engineer at HDR Engineering where he specializes in nutrient removal and management at water resource recovery facilities. He has been employed at HDR since receiving his PhD from UC Davis in 2008. This work is based on his and HDR’s professional experiences in optimizing WRRFs for nutrient removal, the WE&RF Nutrient Challenge, the BACWA Nutrient Watershed Permit Project, the EPA Regional Sidestream Treatment Grant, and other various publications.

JB Neethling

Biography:

Dr. Neethling is a Senior Vice President with HDR Engineering, Inc. As the Technical Director for Wastewater Treatment, he is responsible for evaluating technical solutions to environmental problems, drawing from his academic and research experience to find practical solutions for current challenges.
JB has 35 years’ experience in reviewing, evaluating, and designing wastewater treatment processes. His primary focus is biological wastewater treatment processes, specifically nutrient removal design and operations.
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa) and MS and PhD degrees from University of California, Berkeley.

Amit Pramanik

Biography:

Dr. Amit Pramanik has >30 years of experience in environmental engineering in the USA and overseas on projects funded by municipalities, industry, multi-lateral agencies, and other organizations. He worked with various companies and water & wastewater treatment facilities prior to joining the not-for-profit Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) in 1997. WERF merged with the Water Reuse Research Foundation in 2016, and the newly merged organization became the Water Environment & Reuse Foundation (WE&RF). WE&RF merged with Water Research Foundation based in Denver on 1 January 2018, and is now the Water Research Foundation (WRF). Dr. Pramanik previously served as WERF’s Director of Research, with oversight and responsibility for WERF’s diverse portfolio of research and coordination with collaborative partner organizations. He managed a diverse portfolio of research and innovation projects, some with national or global implications, and works with world renowned technical experts and partner organizations on these topics. He is currently WRF’s Chief Innovation and Development Officer, and Director of the National Research Center for Resource Recovery and Nutrient Management. Amit has a B.Tech (Honors) in Civil Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Virginia Tech.

Thomas Mumley

Biography:

Thomas Mumley has been an Assistant Executive Officer at the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board since 2007. Tom has worked at the San Francisco Bay Water Board for 35 years with experience in nearly all program areas of the Water Board including development and implementation of water quality standards, development and implementation of Total Maximum Daily Loads, NPDES wastewater and stormwater permits, nonpoint source control and watershed management, and enforcement. He is currently overseeing development and implementation of the San Francisco Bay Nutrient Management Strategy. Tom received his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1976 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1983.

Matt Anderson

Biography:

Matthew Anderson is a water quality laboratory analyst for the City of San Luis Obispo with responsibilites covering wastewater, drinking water, source waters, receiving waters, and bio solids. Matthew has a degree in Biological Sciences from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The City of San Luis Obispo's Water Quality Lab has been an active participant in the Water Resource Recovery Facility's disenfection pilot projects, plant optimization, nutrient studies, the facilities plan, and design study.

Biography:

Ufuk Erdal is vice president and serving as the water reuse national practice and technology director in AECOM. He is registered professional engineer with more than 25 years of diverse experience in planning, pilot testing, preliminary and final design and commissioning of advanced treatment facilities used in water reuse applications.
