Nitrogen loads from side streams pose significant challenges for WWTPs. This session will provide a highly valuable insight to understand conventional and state of approaches to treat side streams within existing plant foot print and a cost effective manner.

He is registered professional engineer with more than 25 years of diverse experience in planning, pilot testing, preliminary and final design and commissioning of advanced treatment facilities used in water reuse applications.

Beverley Stinson

Wastewater Business Line Leader


Dr Beverley Stinson, global wastewater treatment sector and technology director at AECOM, served as a technical advisor to the Governor of Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Program for the upgrade of over 96 POTWs. Beverley led the first large scale mainstream deammonification demonstration plant in the world in Singapore. She has served as a Principal Investigator and Technical Contributor for WERF on numerous projects including the recent mainstream deammonification compendium. Dr. Stinson also serves on the WE&RF Research Council.

Mr. Sathyamoorthy is Black & Veatch’s Principal Process and Innovation Leader. He supports wastewater treatment and reuse process engineering services. He brings hands-on experience leading and managing teams of engineers on projects in excess of $3.5M and more than 18 years of industry practice and research.He has involved in concept development and research, pilot testing and conceptual design of innovative side and main stream nitrogen removal technologies. He is based in Walnut Creek, CA.

Michael Falk is a wastewater process engineer at HDR Engineering where he specializes in nutrient removal and management at water resource recovery facilities. He has been employed at HDR since receiving his PhD from UC Davis in 2008. This work is based on his and HDR’s professional experiences in optimizing WRRFs for nutrient removal, the WE&RF Nutrient Challenge, the BACWA Nutrient Watershed Permit Project, the EPA Regional Sidestream Treatment Grant, and other various publications.
