Does your plant use oxidation ditches? Are you concerned about reliably meeting nitrogen limits in your permit? Are you anxious about the expense of conventional approaches to denitrification? This session will provide a practical overview of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification and cost-effective improvements to existing systems to achieve nitrogen compliance.

Andy is a consulting civil engineer with over 13 years of experience in the planning and design of water and wastewater treatment facilities. His design work has included several WWTPs featuring extended aeration systems. Andy received his Bachelor's degree in civil and environmental engineering from U.C. Davis. He lives and works in the Sacramento region.

Kathryn Gies

Engineering Manager

Kathryn Gies is an Engineering Manager at West Yost Assoicates. She has over 18 years experience planning and permitting wastewater treatment and recycled water projects. Her particular areas of expertise include wastewater treatment facilities planning, treatment process design, biological nutrient removal, bioslids land application, sustainability evaluations, recycled water facilities planning, water treatment facilities planning, regulatory compliance studies and permitting, and groundwater quality studies. Kathryn is an active member of CWEA, and has just started a three year term on the State Board of Directors.

Matt Kallerud

Matt Kallerud has 5 years of experience in water and wastewater treatment planning, design, construction & startup. He holds a M.S. in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Davis and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering. His areas of interest include wastewater process modeling, aeration system design, biological nutrient removal, and treatment process startup. He is actively involved with CWEA San Francisco Bay Section's Student and Young Professionals Committee as well as with Carollo's annual workplace giving campaign.
