Participants will learn about how an age old facility was converted into a sustainable resource and an asset to the community. They will also learn how the City is currently taking the next step to meet its recycled water and groundwater recharge programs.

Kaitie has been working at Black and Veatch for over five years. She graduated from UC Irvine in 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. She has worked on various wastewater treatment plant designs ranging in size from 4.9 mgd up to 200 mgd, wastewater treatment plant construction projects, pump station designs and a 10 mgd greenfield drinking water treatment plant design. In her free time, Kaitie enjoys skiing (cross country and downhill), hiking, backpacking, hanging out with friends, playing softball and reading.

Ashu Shirolkar

Project Manager
Black and Veatch


Ashu Shirolkar has over 20 years of experience leading and managing a variety of wastewater projects including treatment plants, pump stations, piping, and storage facilities. These projects included planning, design, and construction support and commissioning of facilities. Ashu was responsible for the overall project management, detailed design, and client coordination through design, bid and construction phases of these projects.

Matt B. Thompson

Wastewater Resources Manager
City of Paso Robles


Matt Thompson is Wastewater Resources Manager for the City of Paso Robles. Matt manages the City's wastewater utility and also serves as project manager for the City's major wastewater project, including the award-winning Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade. Matt is a professional civil and environmental engineer and Envision Sustainability Professional. He is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Kathryn Gies

Engineering Manager
West Yost Associates


Kathryn Gies is an Engineering Manager at West Yost Assoicates. She has over 18 years experience planning and permitting wastewater treatment and recycled water projects. Her particular areas of expertise include wastewater treatment facilities planning, treatment process design, biological nutrient removal, bioslids land application, sustainability evaluations, recycled water facilities planning, water treatment facilities planning, regulatory compliance studies and permitting, and groundwater quality studies. Kathryn is an active member of CWEA, and has just started a three year term on the State Board of Directors.
