Automated House Sealing : Aerosol Envelope Sealing of New Homes

This session will discuss the overall objectives and interim results of a Building America project focused on integrating a new technology for automating the building sealing process in new homes. The technology simultaneously measures, locates, and seals leaks in a building remotely with demonstrations showing 80% leakage reductions with under two hours of injection.
The Building America project team is working directly with builders to identify the best stages for incorporating aerosol sealing, from the perspectives of cost, performance, and seamless integration into the construction process. The cost of the aerosol sealing and resulting house tightness are compared to similar group of houses using conventional sealing methods. In addition to producing tighter houses, conventional sealing methods are evaluated to determine whether they can be eliminated or reduced to further improve cost effectiveness. This talk will present the results of the initial sealing demonstrations for builders in California and Minnesota.

Dave is the Director of Research with the Center for Energy and Environment. He has worked there since 1988 and has over 30 years experience in energy efficiency and indoor air quality in commercial and residential buildings. He has been the manager of a variety of applied research, energy audit, and program development projects. His research includes measurements of commercial building envelope and duct sealing, aerosol envelope sealing and ventilation improvements for multifamily units, and the efficiency of tankless water heaters and combination systems in houses. He was the manager of the CEE’s IAQ group for the Sound Insulation Program.

With more than fifteen years of experience within the building performance industry, Walsh has extensive knowledge of HVAC systems, air distribution, building ventilation, indoor air quality and energy efficiency for both commercial and residential applications. He has been a key speaker at numerous industry events, both domestically and abroad on various topics related to building performance and technological innovations that are transforming the industry. Walsh holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University and a MBA from Yale School of Management. Walsh has also held executive-level positions at Airefco Inc. and Carrier Corporation.
