Do Sealed and Insulated Attics Save Energy?

Thursday, April 26
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Franklin 2 (4th Floor)
CEUs: BPI, InterNachi, NARI, ASHI

Traditionally, attics have been insulated at the flat ceiling with deliberate venting to manage heat and moisture. An alternative used for over 20-years is to seal and insulate the attic at the sloped roof surface. This makes the attic volume more like conditioned space, minimizing HVAC losses. However, this is offset by increased building envelope area and, sometimes, less insulation. If the attic contains older, leaky duct systems, then the net savings could be significant. But what about a modern system built to code with R8 ducts and 5% leakage? When and where are sealed and insulated attics beneficial. How do we limit moisture risk? We will review past literature, field measurements and simulations.

Achilles N. Karagiozis

Director, Building Science
Owens Corning

A seasoned presenter, Achilles Karagiozis, Ph. D., is the global director of the Building Science Group for Owens Corning. He is accountable for transforming Building Science into a growth engine aimed at accelerating energy efficiency improvements in the built environment. Prior to joining Owens Corning, Karagiozis worked at the prestigious Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he was a distinguished research engineer and hygrothermal project manager. He was instrumental in the launch of a number of innovative construction material and system products, the development of design guidelines, software tools and code changes.
