The City of Philadelphia has quietly been leading the way with a range of high performance firsts in the residential market. This tour will take participants on a circuit of as many as 5 diverse examples all within a 4 mile radius of the Center City conference hotel. Detailed commentary will be provided by two local green building experts intimately involved with these projects, and will provide an opportunity for guided walks and talks at many of the locations. We will also be joined by Hap Haven, who will lead a discussion on his remarkable green restoration of an abandoned 1865 carriage house that is his family home in northwest Philadelphia.

Paseo Verde, the hemisphere’s first LEED ND Platinum project includes a multi-bar midrise and townhomes, uses an envelope-first construction style that building scientists would be proud of, as well as a focus on indoor air quality, innovative approaches to green roof and blue roof integration for stormwater management, and photovoltaics to round out the package. Paseo Verde is an exciting transit and community centered, affordable/mixed income development that was awarded LEED Project of the Year in 2015.

Awesometown is a series of 14 infill town homes in Kensington that share a rear courtyard. Built with Passive House principles and an eye for high-end design at an affordable price, this public/private partnership development earned ENERGY STAR v3 and was the first LEED v4 Platinum project in Pennsylvania.

The Icehouse, built right next door to Awesometown, is an excellent example of a market rate condo project going green in the city. With clever amenities like a rooftop dog park, koi pond and rainwater capture for irrigation, it is easy for some to overlook the core of energy efficiency that helped all three phases achieve LEED Platinum.

Goldtex Apartments is an adaptive reuse of an industrial building that sat vacant for many years, until it was redeveloped by Post Brothers. The project included a completely new façade to wrap the building, while maintaining a few key features inside that offer a window into the project’s history. Goldtex achieved LEED Gold using the LEED NC rating system.

Anthony Wayne Senior Phase III is a Passive House Precertified project under construction in southwest Philadelphia. A part of the passive house revolution taking place in the state under the leadership of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA), Anthony Wayne Senior is achieving PHIUS certification with a super envelope, triple pane windows, centralized high efficiency domestic water heating, and balanced, unitized ventilation via ERVs.
