Toward Net Zero Energy: How Home Performance Programs Can Push Markets Beyond 'Standard' Retrofits

Thursday, April 26
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: 408 & 409 (4th Floor)
CEUs: BPI, InterNachi, NARI, ASHI

Deep reductions in home energy use cannot be achieved by stacking renewables or efficiency measures alone but requires an approach combining these ingredients with occupant engagement. As homeowners move forward with renovations, the home performance industry has a role to play in promoting deeper retrofit measures when opportunities present themselves. While a typical weatherization project may routinely achieve 25% savings, 50% or greater reductions are reasonable goals and can even make Net Zero a real possibility with moderately sized renewables. This session shares outcomes of a pilot program in Bellingham, WA incentivizing deep energy retrofits, and through these results and further discussion, aims to shed light on how similar programs can be implemented with the support of public, non-profit, or utility programs.

Learning Objectives:

Lee Laney

Home Energy Advisor
Opportunity Council

Lee began his career in home performance in 2008 working with the Opportunity Council's Building Performance Center. In the 10 years since, he has developed first-hand experience in every aspect of home performance retrofits. He spent a couple years in the trenches as a Weatherization Crew Lead, then as a Project Coordinator in low income weatherization programs, and now as a Home Energy Advisor with the Community Energy Challenge, where he conducts audits and manages retrofits of all sizes and scope for market rate customers. He is a recently Certified Passive House Consultant, and over the last year has managed a "Toward Net Zero Energy" pilot project aiming to shed light on how public, non-profit, or utility programs may support home retrofits aiming to achieve very deep savings, and ultimately push market transformation.
