Exposure to radon gas is considered to be the second leading environmental cause of lung cancer, killing by one estimate 20,000 people a year in the United states. This session answers the following questions:
1. What is radon gas?
2. What is the mechanism of radon entry into buildings?
3. How is radon measured?
4. How is radon entry into buildings mitigated?
5. What are the business opportunities in radon mitigation?

Dick Kornbluth

Principal
Dick Kornbluth, LLC

Dick Kornbluth has been a residential retrofit energy efficiency improvement contractor since 1977, and a full-service Home Performance Contractor since 2001. In 2006, he and his partner sold their Syracuse, New York company, EnTherm Inc, to GreenHomes America. Dick served on the management team of GreenHomes until August, 2006 when he left to start a consulting business, DickKornbluth, LLC. Dick serves on the board of the Building Performance Institute and the Building Performance Contractors Association of New York State. He was also a nationally certified radon mitigation contractor form 1998 to 2016.

Ellen Tohn

Principal/Assistant Professor of Practice
Tohn Environmental Strategies & Brown School of Public Health

Ms. Tohn is an environmental health consultant with over 30 years of experience. She is the founder of Tohn Environmental Strategies and a nationally recognized expert in housing based environmental health threats, green and healthy housing, and indoor air quality. Ms. Tohn works with housing developers, property owners and managers, and energy efficiency programs to create green and healthy housing and developed the nationally recognized “One Touch” approach. Ms. Tohn is an Assistant Professor of Practice at the Brown School of Public Health. She received her BA from Cornell University and a Masters from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Jonathan Wilson

Deputy Director
National Center for Healthy Housing

Jonathan Wilson has worked for NCHH since 1993 and currently serves as Deputy Director and Chief Financial Officer. He has served as a program manager for research, technical assistance, and policy work. Mr. Wilson helped coordinate the Evaluation of the HUD Lead Hazard Control Grant Program, the largest and most comprehensive study of lead hazard control in housing ever undertaken in the United States. His current work includes assessment of the effects of energy efficiency on resident health and methods to protect residents from radon exposure. Mr. Wilson has authored more than 25 peer-reviewed research manuscripts evaluating assessment tools and interventions for healthy housing hazards. He came to NCHH with a background in nonprofit housing development and a Master of Public Policy degree.
