The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) is home to a diverse student body, with 13,000 students; 29% of which identify as an ethnic minority, 28% are first generation students, and 2,000 are active and retired military personnel.
The UCCS Kraemer Family Library recently finished work on a new Diversity and Inclusiveness plan (DIP). This document was a collaborative effort, created with library staff and faculty from different departments. The goals of the Diversity and inclusiveness Plan align with the University's 2012-2020 UCCS Strategic Plan, to create an open and inviting environment to faculty, staff and students. The library’s goal is for this plan to be a living document that will change to fit the needs and wants of the library's patrons and employees.
Presenters will provide an overview of the collaborative journey that the library faculty and staff undertook in the creation of the document, lessons learned along the way, and what we are doing to create, assess, and reward a more culturally competent and inclusive work environment. The emphasis of the presentation will be on ways we are working to integrate the DIP into the everyday culture of the library, by working to affect real change to attitudes regarding diversity and inclusion work among library staff and faculty.
