Reel Voices Speak: Facilitating Community Dialogue on Social Issues through Collaborative Film Screenings

This poster will highlight collaborative social justice film screening and discussion panel events co-organized by Dawn Wing, media librarian and Teaching and Learning Center Coordinator at SUNY- Suffolk County Community College. The poster will provide information about building relationships with campus and community partners drawing from Ms. Wing's experiences working with various student clubs, academic departments, the Center for Social Justice and Human Understanding, and local Native American tribes. Participants will learn about strategies in promoting and facilitating educational programs that foster cross-cultural understanding through film and dialogue. Additional poster topics include: film selection, public performance rights, funding sources, free screening opportunities and coordinating speaker panels. Specific event details for the following films will be presented: "Dalya's Other Country," "The Black Panthers: Vanguards of a Revolution," "Dakota 38," and "Tyrus."

 

Learning Objectives:

• Upon completion, participants will be able to build relationships with campus and community partners for collaborative programming
• Upon completion, participants will be able to design engaging film screenings and panel discussions about social justice issues.
• Upon completion, participants will be able to promote and document collaborative programs in accessible digital formats.
