Individual Paper/Presentation

In order to serve and support our transgender and gender diverse patrons and colleagues, we need to have a solid foundation in appropriate terminology and the principles of inclusive service. This session will begin with basic transgender and gender diversity training which will include explanations of current and outdated terminology, types of violence (deadnaming, misgendering, outing, and microaggressions), how to respond when you make mistakes, and how to use gender neutral pronouns. The purpose of this segment is to ensure attendees will have sufficient background information to understand and engage with the rest of the presentation. Following the introductory training there will be space for a short discussion.
During the second segment, the presenter will draw upon their own experiences as a non-binary person working in an academic library, as well as current literature that discusses cataloguing gender diverse and transgender materials, facilities planning, “preferred name” systems, collection development, and inclusive public service interactions.
Throughout the session, there will be ample time for Q+A as well as opportunities for attendees to discuss what could be or is being done at their own institutions, ask for clarification on anything, and share their own experiences.
