Transforming organizations toward greater and more authentic inclusivity requires that members of that organization understand the types of behaviors that lead to inclusion as well as those actions that exclude people (that are exclusionary). In this session, we will learn to recognize the behaviors that bring people together and those that isolate or exclude others, especially minoritized populations. Utilizing an organization development model called Conscious Actions for Inclusion, we will demonstrate how to integrate specific actions - characterized as “joining behaviors”- into a workplace environment and to identify judging behaviors that can be distancing. Judging behaviors place limits on the individuals being judged, which can lead to distrust and guarded behaviors by both the judger and those being judged. Attendees will explore how transforming individual attitudes and behaviors can translate to enhanced organizational culture that is safe, productive, and that generates better performance. The session will put forward a vocabulary or common language whereby these principles can be discussed among the attendees and taken back to respective workplace environments. Included in this session will be active participant discussions engaging this model in real-life scenarios from the profession. Participants will come away with research-based strategies and foundational knowledge on implementing inclusive behaviors, as well as tools for recognizing and neutralizing exclusionary behaviors.
