Since its establishment in 2011 the Center for the Study of Multicultural Children’s Literature (CSMCL) has provided leadership in the deployment of scholarly and professional tools to foster interest, awareness, and attention to the study of multicultural children’s literature. Indeed, CSMCL’s significant work is evident on multiple levels, including its influence on awards and prizing in children’s literature, its innovation in Día de los Niños literacy programs across diverse communities, and its engagement with constructive dialogs related to cultural diversity and equity in children’s literature, both in term of library practices and scholarship.
The objective of our panel is to present CSMCL’s strategic approaches and intentionality in creating projects that provide innovative solutions to address gaps in the discourse of diversity in children's literature. We will discuss:
• CSMCL’s historical significance in promoting multicultural children's literature
• CSMCL’s impact on children’s literature prizing
• CSMCL’s innovation in diversity programming using multicultural children's literature
• CSMCL’s influence on multicultural children's literature scholarship
