The revised Common Rule includes a provision that, within one year of the implementation date (by July 19, 2019, at the earliest), and every four years thereafter, the rule's definition of “identifiable biospecimens” and “identifiable private information” must be re-evaluated. As such, the interpretation of these terms will perhaps change in light of scientific progress and other considerations. Moreover, the ability of technologies, such as whole genome sequencing, to render information and biospecimens “identifiable” also periodically will be assessed. This debate style session will consider the pros and cons of revising the definition and the potential future impact of such assessments.
