William E. Grizzle, MD, PhD, is professor of pathology and surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Grizzle has been the director of the Tissue Collection and Banking Facility at UAB since 1983, the principal investigator of the Southern Division of the Cooperative Human Tissue Network since 1987, and has directed the Biorepository of the Pulmonary Hypertension Breakthrough Initiative since 2006. He is a founding member of the International Society of Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER), and he is a former past president of ISBER. He received the 2015 ISBER Award, Outstanding Achievement in Biobanking. He is a trustee emeritus of the Biological Stain Commission, having served as vice-president from 1996 to 2000 and president from 2000 to 2004. Dr. Grizzle presents workshops and lectures on biological and biomedical factors affecting the use of tissues in research. Together with his colleague, Ms. Katherine Sexton, he presents national and international workshops on the design and operations of biorepositories. His research focuses on epithelial to mesenchymal transition, optoacoustic imaging, cellular post-transcriptional regulation, and biorepository science. Dr. Grizzle has an AB Honors Degree from Harvard University, and PhD (biophysics) and MD degrees from Johns Hopkins University. He is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology.
