Suzanne M. Rivera, PhD, MSW, is the vice president for research and technology management at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). She also is a faculty member in the Department of Bioethics at the CWRU School of Medicine, and serves as the institutional official for human research protections. Dr. Rivera served on HHS’s Advisory Council on Human Research Protections and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Human Studies Review Board. She currently serves on PRIM&R’s Board of Directors and the Board of Directors for the Council on Governmental Relations. Her scholarly interests include research ethics, health disparities, and science policy. Most recently, her research has focused on the ethical and policy implications of biospecimen collection and use, and the privacy considerations associated with research uses of digital technologies. She co-edited the book Specimen Science (MIT Press, 2017). Dr. Rivera received her undergraduate degree from Brown University, a master’s degree in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley, and a doctoral degree in public policy from the University of Texas at Dallas.
