Properly Sizing Replacement Heating Systems

Codes and the low-income weatherization program require design heat load calculations for sizing replacement heating systems. The results often result in replacement heating systems being installed that are one model size larger than needed. Using actual winter energy use and heating degree days, it can be identified when these calculations need to be refined to obtain a result that is closer to reality. An Excel calculator will be explained and demonstrated for sizing based on actual energy use, heating degree days, and efficiencies of existing and replacement heating systems. Using this calculation, design heat load calculations can be accepted or questioned. Some common input errors in heat load calculations will be shared. Simple benefits for properly sized furnaces include reduced noise levels and air movement, and with furnaces with ECM blowers, increased electric savings.

Have had over three decades working with energy efficiency in buildings with Wisconsin and Alaska state programs. Provided training to weatherization energy auditors and inspectors and HVAC technicians on aspects of combustion, air flow, blower motor efficiencies, replacement sizing, and testing of efficiency, CO, airflow, Btu input, and condensing boiler high and low fire. Have compared over 100 REScheck design heat load calculations to sizing based on current actual energy use, heating degree days, and existing and planned system efficiencies before weatherization work is done.

After teaching HVAC for 25 years in the Community College system Richard continues teaching HVAC as a trainer for the Illinois Weatherization Program through the University of Illinois Indoor Climate Research and Training center in Champaign IL. Richard develops short term training courses that focus on “hands on” training for the Heating and Cooling industry. Before teaching Richard was an HVAC/Electrical contractor for 20 years. He has BA from Northwestern Medical School, an MS in Vocational Education from Southern Illinois University and ABD (All but dissertation) Doctorate from Illinois State University in the field of Curriculum and Instruction.
