The Smart Home

2018 HPC National Conference Session

From Switches to Smart Thermostats: Out with the Old, In with the New

Wednesday, April 25
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Location: Franklin 3 (4th Floor)
CEUs: BPI, InterNachi, NARI, ASHI

In this session, presenters will discuss recent work being conducted on thermostats and controls. Learn from a study that examined the penetration of digital thermostats in single- and multi-family households and commercial buildings in five states around the US, which also looked at the age of the thermostat age and how many contained mercury. The estimated metric tons of mercury on US walls -- and the energy savings potential results -- will likely surprise you! Dr. Skumatz will also discuss estimated measure lifetimes for older vs. newer types, and what that means for natural market turnover vs. the more aggressive turnover that would help states meet goals for mercury thermostat recycling. Michael Blasnik will discuss the latest smart thermostat saving evaluations including low income applications. Bruce Manclark will cover the use of smart thermostats as quality control tools to help target inspections for newly installed heat pumps.
