Based on DOE's recently completed literature review, studies suggest nearly two-thirds of residential HVAC systems under-perform due to improper installation and maintenance, resulting in increased energy costs and reduced comfort. With more than 20 years invested in quality installation programs nationwide, under-performing HVAC installations still prevail. Emerging technologies like variable capacity equipment, on-board sensors and monitoring systems, as well as automated verification tools hold some promise for changing this, but change will not happen if the model doesn’t fit the market. Additionally, the changing utility landscape is rapidly redefining what matters most, with increased focus on beneficial electrification, demand management, and load shifting, all of which are highly influenced by HVAC system performance.
