Though endodontists frequently encounter resorptive dental conditions, significant misunderstanding of these pathologies exists within the greater dental community. The Glossary of Endodontic Terms defines resorption as a “condition associated with either a physiologic or pathologic process resulting in a loss of dentin, cementum and/or bone." Though seemingly simplistic, resorption represents a set of diverse processes and corresponding etiologies, resulting in heterogeneous presentations. This lecture presents an organized, evidence-based algorithm for differentiation among resorption classifications. It reviews the shared and unique pathophysiology of root resorption, included internal, external and invasive cervical varieties. Evidence-based management strategies will be discussed, including detailed protocols and a discussion of the prognosis of differing treatments. With an emphasis on provider-patient and provider-referrer communication, attendees will gain confidence in their ability to accurately explain this unique and important diagnostic entity.
