After alcohol and tobacco, opioids and marijuana are the most common recreationally used drugs in the United States and Canada. It has been reported that 5% of the population uses opioids illicitly and over 10% of the population uses marijuana at least once a month. This course will present a summary of the available evidence of how marijuana and opioids affect oral health. The course will discuss these illicit drugs and their affect on caries and xerostomia, dental pain, periodontal disease, oral cancer and pathology, dental implants, and patient management.
