The debate on the relationship between root canal treatment procedures like instrumentation irrigation and filling and crack formation in the root canal walls has emerged after different research methodologies resulted in contrasting conclusions. At the same time, cracks and fractures are often observed in endodontically treated teeth. This presentation will focus on the different methodologies used to approach the question and new insights related to dehydration of dentine, stress concentrations occlusal forces, age and time after root canal treatment. As the formation of cracks is a complex and multidisciplinary phenomenon, the combination of these factors and others could sharpen the debate and offer some clarifications.
