We will discuss the importance of evaluating and treating patients as a whole person. A large number of our patients have medical compromise that could require modification of dental care. Focus will be placed on cancer patients and how cancer therapies can affect the oral cavity. Oral complications observed during cancer treatment will be presented and diagnosis and management will be discussed. Several new anticancer drugs are being introduced and new oral complications are being diagnosed. Emphasis will be on osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) including the way to diagnose and manage this complication. Jaw pain in patients taking antiresorptives may mimic toothache, leading to endodontic treatment. The persistence of symptoms after endodontic therapy frustrate patients and professionals.
