Registrar for Collections
New-York Historical Society Museum & Library
Mark B. Schlemmer is the Registrar for Collections at the New-York Historical Society Museum & Library in New York City. He has over ten years of professional experience in the museum sector, augmented with an MA in Museum Professions from Seton Hall University. Passionate about the role of museums in our society, he believes firmly that #MuseumsAreNotNeutral.
On staff at N-YHS since 2015, Mark currently manages the Society's active outgoing loans program, travelling exhibitions, and select in-house temporary exhibitions. Prior to that, he was on the registrarial team at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
From 2014 to 2017 Mark served on the Board of Directors of ARCS (Association of Registrars and Collections Specialists) where he was the Chairman of the Education Committee. In that role, he spearheaded and managed the first fifteen editions of #ARCSchat, a monthly Twitter-based conversation on topics related to museums and collections management.
In 2013 Mark founded @ITweetMuseums, a popular, non-affiliated, independent Twitter-based initiative which has grown to more than 14,500 followers. ITM was created to encourage and support all cultural workers to tweet about museums from their personal accounts. As part of the initiative, Mark has conducted social media training work shops for museum staff and teens, led tweet-ups at museums and for the United Nations, given conference presentations in both English and Spanish, lectured in graduate programs at various universities, written for print publications, and created how-to resources freely available to anyone looking for guidance in pursuing a more museum-focused use of social media.
