Preparator's Apprentice, Diversity Apprenticeship Program
My name is Vanessa Garcia and I'm currently a Preparator's Apprentice through The Broad's Diversity Apprenticeship Program. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. Being raised by parents who where incredibly hands on meant that there were always projects around the house to help with and learn from. My dad build more than half our home and my mom was a seamstress and incredibly crafty. The financial limitations that I grew up under were actually welcomed and seen as opportunity to cultivate more creativity on a daily basis. My parents taught me that I could build pretty much anything I wanted which boosted my confidence as a creator. Being drawn to working with my hands naturally lead me to study art at Cal State LA. I continue to use art as a tool to learn more about myself and to better understand the world. I am currently exploring the concept of mandalas and the symbol of the swirl. I am interested in exploring identity post trauma and the way art can be a tool to heal individuals and community.
