Clare Brown is the Chief of Design at the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution. She is an Exhibition Designer with 20 years of experience creating exhibitions and leading exhibition project teams for museums in New York City and Washington DC, including the Museum of the City of New York, the New-York Historical Society, and the National Museum of American History. She holds a BA in Cultural Anthropology and Art, an MA in Museum Studies, and is currently completing doctoral research for a PhD in Exhibition & Experience Design at Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London). She served as Chair and Program Head of the Master of Arts in Exhibition Design program at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at The George Washington University from 2012 to 2017. Clare grew up in Africa and Asia, is a dancer, trapeze artist, worked in the theater as a lighting technician and carpenter, and she geeks out over things like creative process, people-first design, and the relationships between space and meaning.
