Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose
Marilee Jennings is the Executive Director of Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose, where she has spearheaded comprehensive efforts to reach and serve the ethnically diverse families of Silicon Valley who live in the minority-majority community, now the 10th largest city in the US. Her efforts have been far reaching throughout the museum through initiatives incorporating exhibits, educational programs, events, operations, marketing, staff and governance. Today, the museum's audience is truly reflective of the surrounding community, and data collected from members shows significant success in attracting and retaining visitation from Latino and Vietnamese families, the two largest ethnic communities in San Jose. In depth work to diversify staff for the past decade has also netted results with 60% of museum staff self-reporting at least one priority dimension of diversity (ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender or disability). Building on a decades-long focus on diversity and inclusion, Children's Discovery Museum is leading the Cultural Competence Learning Institute (CCLI), in partnership with the Association of Children's Museums, Association of Science-Technology Centers, American Alliance of Museums and Garibay Group, as a year-long, cohort-based professional development institute designed to help museums of all sizes, types and geographies build institutional capacity to maximize the benefits of diversity and inclusion within the workforce, increase relevance of services offered and access to the community, and adapt to changing demographics and educational needs. She is the Past President of the Association of Children's Museums and a Noyce Leadership Fellow.
