China and Inner Asia
Organized Panel Session
War and the violence associated with it have left thousands of soldiers and civilians with disabilities. Yet disabled individuals are rarely featured in Chinese cinematic, literary, or artistic works depicting the Chinese Civil War or the Anti-Japanese War. Artists focus on the able-bodied and neuro-typical, and those that are injured either recover fully or die the quick death of heroic martyrs. Disabled and disfigured combatants and non-combatants are seldom shown. This trend follows a longstanding tradition of how battle is commemorated in war monuments worldwide.
