Inter-area/Border Crossing
Organized Panel Session
If Paris was the model city of the twentieth century, Singapore and Shanghai are the model cities of the twenty-first. Images of urban Asia circulate both within and beyond the region as templates for what the world city is, could, and should be. This panel begins with the claim that it matters, therefore, how “urban Asia” is represented, by whom, and towards what end(s).
To critically interrogate the relationship between images and urban experience, this panel adopts an interdisciplinary and inter-Asian approach, drawing from visual anthropology, film studies, and art practice, and from China and Indonesia area studies. We consider the technologies, practices, and politics of image-making through analyses of documentary, photography, and film, asking: How are images of Asian cities being employed in projects of place, nation, and subject-making? What new possibilities of (urban) living do they evoke or render thinkable? And what older understandings of the city are they advancing, complicating, or replacing?
