Workshop Session
This teaching development workshop will present five examples for integrating Taiwan Studies into Asian Studies and global course curricula, with a wide range of humanities and social science disciplines represented as well as a short study abroad program. Each of the presenters will use a previously taught syllabus that showcases unique teaching perspectives.
The goal of the workshop is to demonstrate several examples of how Taiwan can be introduced and utilized pedagogically across a spectrum of institutional and academic teaching contexts. The workshop especially targets general Asian Studies teachers and faculty not familiar with Taiwan who are interested in integrating more area and global examples, as well as Taiwan Studies experts who wish to broaden the scope of Taiwan-focused courses to appeal across a wider spectrum of students.
The presenters will show that Taiwan offers insights into consequential humanities and social sciences questions and issues. Taiwan as a site of knowledge or theory production is highlighted, demonstrating that there are unique contributions to both area studies and non-area studies curricula through teaching Taiwan.
Pei-yin Lin (Hong Kong University) will approach film and literature from the perspective of curricula in the United Kingdom and in Asia. Michelle Yeh (University of California, Davis) will discuss teaching Taiwan within film and literature studies in a large US public university. Wayne Soon (Vassar College) will present on leading a three-week study abroad program to Taiwan for a liberal arts college. Ian Chong (National University of Singapore) will focus on including Taiwan in comparative politics courses as a means of illuminating larger social scientific processes. James Lin (University of Washington) will present a syllabus of interdisciplinary Taiwan Studies for graduate students that utilizes Taiwan as a lens to accomplish MA and PhD program curriculum goals.
Each presenter will have 12 minutes to present, followed by 45 minutes of audience questions and discussion. Evan Dawley (Goucher College) will chair the panel, moderate the Q&A, and offer insights during the discussion from his experience teaching Taiwanese history.
