Moral education has always been prominent in primary school curricula. Recently, the Ministry of Education issued the “Guidelines on Moral Education in Primary and Middle Schools, (2017)” calling on Education Bureaus at all levels in the country to mind moral education in schools. Moral education stresses “love for the country.” Understanding “traditional culture,” according to the state’s mandate for school children, is necessary in inspiring the sentiment of love for the country. In my paper, I examine how primary school textbooks teach traditions, and how other reading materials (such as supplementary readings) as well as extra-curricular activities (such as visits to historical sites) reinforce the mandated moral education.
