Organized Panel Session
This panel investigates gender conceptions, ideologies, subjectivities, and the gendering of instruments in Balinese music. Building on the well-documented history of Balinese performing arts in Bali and the diaspora, this panel seeks to highlight the ways in which gender and perceptions of femininity inform performance. Topics addressed include the founding, formation, and development of one village’s women’s gamelan, notions of strength, empowerment, and equality among female gamelan musicians, the gendering of instruments, and ideas of femininity and performativity.
