Workshop Session
The proposed workshop will explore the opportunities afforded for both scholars and legislators by access to or collaboration on research projects supported by, among others, the European Parliament.
The workshop will introduce the work of the European Parliament and its research andpolicy advisory services in detail and illustrate possible forms of mutual beneficial collaboration through examples. It will include as speakers external researchers in Europe contracted to work with the EP on a range of topics and countries in Asia.
The European Parliament provides a wide array of high-quality research and analysis for the use of Members and staff, in the form of studies, topical digests and other support for pending legislation, international agreements and issues related to global governance. Research papers produced are normally freely available to the public, but may not be as well-known to scholars or even other policy-makers. Given the needs of legislators, Parliament’s research tends to be concise and produced to relatively short timelines, whilst based on an objective assessment of available facts and evidence.
In light of the European Parliament’s powers in the area of external affairs, it also produces or commissions work on a variety of Asian subjects and on international relations more broadly. Topics addressed cover areas as varied as development and sustainability, security affairs, human rights and governance, regional cooperation and integration, international trade and investment.
Opportunities for fruitful collaboration between parliamentary researchers and academics are numerous and varied, including: access to parliamentary research for academics (and others); possible collaboration on longer research projects; the opportunity to participate in in-house presentations to researchers, parliamentary staff, and Members; and, upon invitation, the opportunity to present recent research findings to relevant Parliament Committees or Delegations.
