The objective of this symposium is to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to utilize social media to positively influence their professional career. Platforms include Twitter and YouTube, or web-based sharing platforms specific to research communities such as Research Gate. Social media based scholarship is specific to measurement of research dissemination through social media platforms. Emerging technology based platforms offer new venues of career development and self-marketing through the tracking and sharing of research breakthroughs and discoveries. The role of impact factor on tenure and promotion may eventually be supplemented or shared by alternative social media related metrics (altmetrics)
