To study potential risk factors of falls in our facility and consequently implement the interventions to reduce fall rate.
Data was collected from all inpatients admissions on 2017, variables analyzed include: age, gender, length of stay, discharge setting, diagnosis, body mass index (BMI), Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score on admission, FIM score on discharge, FIM change and length of stay efficiency (LSE). Data of the fall was also analyzed, including fall location, time of the fall, Morse score, assistance during the fall, fall risk medication, cognitive level prior to the fall, call light usage, if resulted in injury, among others. Data was analyzed to find out possible risk factors that associated with fall.
Inpatient rehabilitation unit at community hospital
Participants (or Animals, Specimens, Cadavers) :
All rehabilitation inpatients admitted during 2017
Main Outcome Measure(s) :
Fall rate among different groups
994 patients were admitted in 2017 and there was a total of 58 falls. Certain factors were found to impact the rate of falls significantly, including younger age, diagnosis of stroke, lower FIM at admission and discharge, need assistance of one person, alert and oriented, longer length of stay, a higher Morse score. Rest factors did not show significant difference.
This study helped us to identify risk factors that associates with fall, including younger age, diagnosis with stroke, admitted with a lower FIM score, etc. However, we are also found that a few interesting findings, such as the frequency of nurse rounds or shift changes do not influence falls. Also, patients who fall are not more likely to sustain an injury and the fall does not have an impact on their functional level.
