GENERAL OBJECTIVE: Familiarize attendees with various aspects of TBI medicolegal and expert witness work including medicolegal roles (treater, expert witness, peer reviewer, and consultant), ethics, business and legal issues of medicolegal involvement, and medicolegal examination, report and testifying recommendations.

 

Learning Objectives:

• Provide attendees with an understanding of the various medicolegal roles that they may be asked to participate in as well as their similarities and differences.
• Review ethical challenges and principles of medicolegal involvement for brain injury rehabilitation professionals including confidentiality, adversarialism, agendas, nature of relationship with examinee, boundary issues, among other areas to be discussed.
• Examine issues germane to the business and legal aspects of expert witness work in brain injury including working with attorneys, contracts, retainers, marketing, certifications, liability, and licensure.
• Enumerate advice on how to structure expert witness feedback in the context of medicolegal evaluations, peer reviews and medicolegal consultation.
• Educate attendees on stylistic tips and caveats for providing expert testimony at deposition and/or in court.
