The purpose of this symposium is to provide and understanding, through a comprehensive literature search, of food insecurity and its relationship to chronic disease, chronic disease management and functional impairment. Appropriate and accessible, validated screening tools will be critically evaluated for use in the clinic. The role and ethical responsibility of the rehabilitation professional in identifying food insecurity will be discussed. Lastly, the practicality of screening for food insecurity and functional impairment in an efficient manner to quickly identify patients who are risk for worsening chronic disease and disability will be discussed.
