Post-traumatic agitation is linked to elopement, patient injuries, and prolonged restraint use which create discharge barriers leading to prolonged length of stay. An interdisciplinary team was assembled to address behavioral management challenges in three domains: environment, staffing, and behavior monitoring. After changes were made in all three areas within a period of one year, the average length of stay was reduced by 1.68 days in 2018 compared to 2017. There was also a reduction in patient falls, elopements, and restraint use. There was a 350% increase in non-violent crisis intervention trained staff.
