Dr. Sylvia Shaw has assumed many leadership roles at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Hospital (Rancho). She is currently Acting Chair of the Department of Medicine, Medical Director of Outpatient Specialty Services and Chief of Endocrinology. Dr. Shaw was President of the Professional Staff Association (PSA) at Rancho Los Amigos and was involved in PSA Leadership position for a total of 8 years, and served as an Associate Medical Director for two years.
As a clinician, she is a board certified endocrinologist, providing inpatient and outpatient consultation. She has been an inpatient primary care provider on the Limb Preservation Service for more than 22 years. Dr. Shaw completed medical School at U.C. Davis and both residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Endocrinology at LAC+USC. She also obtained a Master’s degree in teaching and learning from USC Keck School of Medicine and has academic appointments at both Keck School of Medicine and Western School of Medicine.
In addition to the clinical work, she has an interest in clinical research in diabetes complications, to health literacy, and the impact of communication for improved adherence for diabetes self-management. She has participated in clinical trials related to diabetes, and hypoglycemia prevention and management among hospitalized patients. She has also driven health service research studies in the areas of patient safety. To ensure evidence-based practice at Rancho, she has consistently provided updates in the latest development for diabetes care. She is passionate in teaching, team work, and clear communication.
