Dr. Butzer received his MD from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed his residency in Neurology at the University of Iowa. He was a faculty in neurology at the University of Iowa, and is Clinical Professor of Medicine at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.
A fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, Dr. Butzer served as the Chief Medical Officer at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital for 29 years. During his tenure he also directed the muscular dystrophy clinic and the motion analysis center, a computerized gait laboratory. Dr. Butzer stepped down from his duties as CMO in 2014 to form the Center for Research & Innovation, and served as the Center Director for its first four years. He is now Research Director Emeritus. In 2014, the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine was initiated in the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, with Dr. Butzer as the Director, a position he continues to hold.
With his guidance and through his leadership on the Board of Directors, the Greater Grand Rapids YMCA, in collaboration with the Mary Free Bed Guild, in 2015 opened the nation’s first YMCA facility based on Universal Design. The facility has since received certification through the Global Universal Design Commission.
