The American Dream Literacy Initiative strives to develop tools and resources for libraries and library staff to provide effective literacy services to English language learners. Since 2008, 200 libraries in Dollar General Communities have built replicable programs, developed coalition-building strategies, and provided annotated lists of vetted resources for adult English language learners. In this interactive session, attendees are invited to hear examples of these programs, strategies, and resources from previous American Dream libraries. The poster itself will provide an overview of the past 11 years of the initiative and present attendees with information on how they can initiate or expand literacy services for adult English language learners in their own libraries. The American Dream Literacy Initiative is administered by ALA’s Public Programs Office, in partnership with ALA’s Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services, and funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
