Did you know the amount of federal money each state receives for libraries and many other resources is directly tied to the U.S. Census? The 2020 census will be the first census to use the Internet as the primary means to collect data from households. In identifying hard-to-count areas, the U.S. Census Bureau has historically focused on areas with a low mailing return rate, but the upcoming census offers new challenges. Using GIS mapping tools and freely available government data, the State Library of Ohio is identifying areas with limited internet accessibility, locating their proximity to public libraries and exploring ways libraries can expand their reach to ensure our residents are being counted.
