Graduate students face many obstacles in their pursuit of advanced degrees. Support services at colleges and universities can make a significant impact for graduate students in their progress toward degree attainment. At the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah, graduate students are offered an array of services to help them achieve their goals. Specifically, Marriott Library addresses the different aspects of graduate student lives by providing opportunities for social networking and skill building via a highly popular social and writing boot camp each semester and by providing designated spaces within the library (the Graduate Reading Room and Family Reading Room). Since Fall 2017, the Graduate Student Social attendance has dramatically increased due to increased refreshment offerings, word-of-mouth promotion, repeat students, and strong marketing partnerships with the Graduate School and the Marketing & PR Department at Marriott Library. In addition, feedback from graduate students is regularly collected and analyzed. Due to the high number of student-parents at the University of Utah, the Family Reading Room was developed to provide opportunities for students to accomplish studying and other tasks when their children are with them on campus. Currently, the Graduate Student Reading Room is undergoing a phased remodel to improve the usage of the room. By attending to the various needs of graduate students, Marriott Library speaks to the entire experience of students and thus assists them in their pursuit of academic achievement.
