ave you ever wondered why your discussions about a project with a student employee do not lead directly to your vision of the completed project? Have you been looking for ways to improve students’ career-ready soft skills through mentoring? Guided by these questions, two academic librarians have adopted a perfect combination of Brené Brown’s questioning strategies and Iowa GROW® ‘s reflective practices to help students strengthen their employability skills.
This poster will share a practical framework that will help academic librarians mentor students through a successful and effective process. While developed and implemented with two graphic design students, these practical strategies are transferrable across disciplines and working opportunities within different types of libraries. The poster will offer practical take-aways of aligning libraries’ employment with high impact practices and invoking students’ creativity, responsibility, and communication skills.
