Queens is the most ethnically diverse county in the United States, with residents from almost 200 countries speaking more than 150 languages. With the help of foreign consulates in New York, local immigrant community leaders and international partner libraries, we have been successful in enhancing and diversifying our public program offerings, as well as our international language collections. In this Diversity Fair poster we will show examples of how we have been able to offer language learning classes in Korean, special cultural offerings from China and Bangladesh and collections in languages not readily available in the United States, including Burmese and Georgian through strategic partnerships with mutual benefits and little or no cost. With an understanding of cross-cultural communication, cultural competence and cultural humility, you can enrich your library and your library customers in amazing ways. Visitors to the poster will come away with a better understanding of outreach efforts that create mutual trust in serving both the diaspora communities and those wishing to learn more about the cultures around them. The poster will contain photos, sample program flyers and a handout will be available summarizing our efforts.
