Annual Conference Session
Digitizing the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives
Presented by Frederick Zarndt, Digital Divide Data
The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives are the largest and most complete record of the Khmer Rouge actions against the citizens of Cambodia during the reign of Pol Pot. This unique archival collection of materials held within the Archives of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (TSGM) are mostly paper-based with the main exceptions being the photograph and negative collections along with the microfilm reels, which are themselves a copied rendition of documents and photographs. This paper and presentation will describe the digitization process at the Museum, training of the staff, collection of descriptive, technical, and administrative metadata, and the creation of a database of images and metadata with a Greenstone web portal for the digitized Archives.
Shedding a light on a gem: Robert E. Cunningham, Photographer and Collector
Presented by Patrice-Andre Prud'homme, Oklahoma State University Library
In the Stillwater NewsPress Forum page titled “Operation Negative” on September 21, 1978, Cunningham’s collection was mentioned as “the best and most complete photographic history of Stillwater and [Oklahoma State University] ever amassed in the state.” Photographer and collector, Robert E. Cunningham (1906-1991) collected thousands of glass plates and acetate negatives from the turn of the 20th century. The majority of the photographs depict the early history of Oklahoma State University (A & M College), local history, and studio portraits of early residents of Stillwater. With funding from the National Archives--National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the OSU Library Archives are digitizing and stabilizing the digital surrogates of these historically significant and fragile analog items to save the past and share it with the public. As other parts of the collection exist elsewhere, the intent is to further research and coordinate with other organizations and link out to other repositories that hold Cunningham photographs. This presentation aims to promote the curated work of this gem as it offers a great opportunity for digital scholarship and preservation.
