Collection Diversification at the University of Denver Libraries
The Collection Diversification Task Force at the University of Denver (DU) Libraries seeks to identify gaps in its collections related to works by and about Native America. In particular, the Task Force seeks to identify literature by and about Cheyenne and Arapaho people; DU has recently taken steps to honor that it resides on lands held in stewardship by the Cheyenne and Arapaho, and recognize that DU’s founder, John Evans, was culpable for the Sand Creek Massacre. We feel an ethical obligation as a library to redress these historical wrongs. As such, the Task Force has made use of a five-step strategy to analyze and improve DU Libraries’ collections relative to this project. In this presentation we’ll discuss the aforementioned strategy, the initial results of this long-term project, and the ways in which this project has begun to inform cataloging and collection development processes at DU Libraries.

Collection Assessment, Ebooks vs. Print Books: Usage by patron, format, and subject area within the context of Alliance resource sharing
How close do our perceptions of format and subject preference actually match the behavior of our users? I conducted a collection assessment to understand user behavior and determine areas of growth for the University of Portland Clark Library ebook resources, within the context of an academic library consortium. This presentation outlines the project workflow and discusses the assessment results. The data revealed valuable relationships between format preference, users, and subject areas, especially in the humanities disciplines. Ebooks classified in subjects such as social science and art showed significantly higher usage at Clark Library than prior academic research suggested. The data provided a foundational look at the environment in which the library operates and a broad basis for understanding how each subject area in library and consortial collections are currently read.
