Congressman G. K. Butterfield is a life-long resident of eastern North Carolina. Butterfield graduated from college and law school at North Carolina Central University.
Prior to his election to Congress in 2004, he practiced civil rights law, served as a Resident Superior Court Judge, and an Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.
Currently, Butterfield serves in the Democratic leadership as Chief Deputy Whip and is a former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.
He sits on the influential Committees on Energy & Commerce and House Administration.
